Civilian Vessels

Ferries

At the uneasy times of XVII-XVIII centuries buccaneers and capers were the masters of the sea. The never-ending warfare and continual pirate menaces forced trade ships to power up their weaponry. At the other hand, any merchant could smuggle or buy a caper's license and start plundering others. Certainly a merchants' armament was no match to that of a battleship ships, and transports' speed was lower because of smaller crews, but in certain situations merchants could show a serious resistance. Merchant ships also transferred troops, food, and ammunition, and were of great importance during colonial wars.
